ROWAN, QUINN, PAUL, AND NICK arrived with breakfast as promised the next morning. Lana Davenport raced to Poe the second they were inside to show off her new bag, a gift from her grandfather. Kai had a huge truck.

The look on Rowan’s face suggested she wasn’t thrilled with the gifts, but she was trying—maybe not succeeding—in keeping her opinion to herself.

“Nice bag,” Harper said to Lana, who seemed thrilled.

“Thank you. Grandpa got it for me.” Lana shot her grandfather an adoring look.

“Even though we told him to stop bringing gifts whenever he visits,” Rowan said pointedly.

For his part, Paul merely smiled at his daughter. “It’s a grandfather’s prerogative,” he replied, brandishing a huge bag. “I have gifts for the other children too.”

Harper’s eyebrows hopped in surprise. “You got gifts for the other kids? They’re not your grandchildren.”

“Close enough.” Paul beamed at Poe, Buffy, and Barney in turn. Then he pulled a huge bag of children’s makeup out and handed it to Buffy, who started squealing the second she saw it.

“Thank you so much,” Buffy gushed. “This is amazing.” She hugged the bag to her chest.

“Yes, there’s nothing we love more than makeup crushed into the carpet,” Shawn agreed dryly.

Paul didn’t look bothered. “Rowan loved makeup when she was a child. Her mother liked to spend time with her, show her how to use it and stuff. The rule was Rowan could only use it when chaperoned.”

“Ah.” Shawn smiled. “I guess that’s a good rule.”

“And for you, young sir.” Paul handed Barney a backpack that was similar to the one his twin had received. It had Matchbox Cars inside, though.

“Awesome.” Barney pumped his fist. “Thank you.” He was reverent as he took the bag. “Is that a pink Cadillac?”

Paul nodded. “It is. I’m told that’s one of the hardest cars to find.”

“I love it. Thank you so much.” Barney was genuinely grateful. “You’re cooler than my grandma and grandpa.”

“Don’t ever let your grandmother hear that,” Zander warned, wagging a finger. He smiled at Paul all the same. “Thank you. That wasn’t necessary, though. Buffy and Barney realize that not everybody gets gifts at the same time.”

“I happen to enjoy buying gifts,” Paul replied. “Plus, given our position in our company, we see a lot of prototypes. People are always looking for us to invest.” He turned to Poe. “Which is how we have this for you.” He produced yet another bag. This one was black and shaped like a coffin.

Poe’s eyes went wide. “Holy moly.” Harper thought maybe her daughter’s eyes might bug out of her head. “That’s the coolest thing I’ve ever seen.”

“Technically it’s something they want to have on the market for next Halloween,” Paul explained. “You will be the only person in the world with this purse … and what’s inside.”

Intrigue lit Poe’s eyes. “What’s inside?”

Delighted by her excitement, Paul clapped his hands. “Take a look.”

Poe looked toward her father for permission and Jared nodded. He was honestly curious what she would find. Poe started digging items out quickly.
